North or South Kolkata Durga Puja route: how to choose
There is no universal “better” side of Kolkata for Puja. North Kolkata is strong for heritage streets and dense historic clusters; South Kolkata offers major art-led routes across several neighbourhood belts.
Choose North Kolkata when…
You want heritage houses, traditional community landmarks and the lanes around Baghbazar, Kumartuli, Sovabazar and Shyambazar. The distances can be compact, but crowd movement is often slow.
Choose South Kolkata when…
You want art-led and architectural pandals around Gariahat, Ballygunge, Deshapriya Park, Kalighat or New Alipore. Pick one belt; “South Kolkata” is too large for a single short walk.
Do not optimise only for the number of stops
A route with four neighbouring pandals and a clear return station is usually more enjoyable than ten disconnected landmarks. Keep a buffer for managed queues and change the next leg when police diversions require it.
